GMCLA members are all volunteers with a passion for choral music! In addition to our subscription concert series many GMCLA members participate in our Alive Music Project (AMP) performances in area schools, as well as appearances at events, fundraisers, and on TV. We welcome anyone interested in auditioning although it does require preparation.
Prior to auditioning, you must attend the open rehearsal. Open rehearsals are actual rehearsals as the Chorus prepares for an upcoming concert. This will give you an idea of the vocal demands of GMCLA and the level of vocal and sight-reading abilities expected, as well as what to expect at weekly rehearsals. At the open rehearsals you will be assigned a buddy member in your vocal range to sit with and answer some questions. Following the rehearsal is an information meeting where you will learn about becoming a member. Audition appointments are assigned at the conclusion of the information meeting.
Open Rehearsal Dates:
GMCLA typically holds auditions twice per season, usually in September and January. Please check back for updated information.
Because the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles strives for artistic excellence, auditions are both necessary and competitive. And we understand that auditions can be a nerve-wracking experience! Part of the audition process is getting to know you, so we do our best to make the process as welcoming and comfortable as possible.
Auditions are private and individual. You will audition before a very small group of GMCLA leadership including our Artistic Director, Assistant Conductor, Accompanist and Section Music Leaders. They’ll ask about your musical background and lead you in some vocalizing and scale exercises to determine your vocal range. They’ll give you a simple piece of music to test your level of sight-reading ability, and you will be played different pitch sequences to remember and reproduce and to test your rhythmic ability.
Then you’ll sing all or part of your audition song! Choose a song you are comfortable singing and that demonstrates your range and ability. It can be anything from classical to musical theater to pop. As time is limited, don’t be concerned if you are cut off before you finish the entire song.
Please bring an extra copy of your sheet music in the key you are singing for our accompanist. No personal accompanists please. It is also acceptable to sing acapella if you prefer.
A GMCLA season generally consists of three main season subscription concerts (typically in Dec, Mar, and Jun) with 2 or 3 performances in each concert. Throughout the season we also have additional, optional performances at various public and private events as well as in schools as part of our Alive Music Project.
Weekly rehearsals are Monday evenings from 7–10pm. There are usually 3-4 optional sectional rehearsals, sometimes accompanied by a social activity. In the spring we have a weekend retreat in Malibu (also optional, usually in Feb). 1 or 2 extra full-Chorus rehearsals may be scheduled as needed, usually on a weekend. New members will receive a complete schedule of all rehearsals, performances and other important dates so they know what to expect and can plan their calendar.
Rehearsal time is valuable as we memorize a great deal of music for each concert. There is time, however, for socializing and taking care of any Chorus business shortly before and during the break midway through rehearsal. Because we strive for the best artistry possible, GMCLA has an attendance policy of no more than 3 absences during each concert period. You will be expected to review your music outside of rehearsal as well so you will be fully prepared for concerts. To assist with this we make recorded rehearsal tracks available for each concert.
GMCLA is more than just a Chorus; we are a family. Friends are made and Chorus-related activities – both social and performance – become part of one’s Chorus life. This can occupy as much time as you are interested in or as your schedule and life allows. But most members find they get the most satisfaction and reward from their GMCLA membership the more they are able to get involved. It’s all part of our mission: changing hearts and minds!
Membership in GMCLA requires a certain financial commitment, but we’re flexible in making payment arrangements for those in financial need. The annual membership investment for GMCLA members is due during the first several weeks of each concert period. Dues are payable in three equal installments of $90, or you can pay $255 at the beginning of the season and save $5/concert. An installment plan is also available. The Fair Share Investment Program (FSIP) allows members to volunteer work hours to the chorus in lieu of paying financial investments.
Members are expected to buy their own performance tuxedo and accessories. Many chorus members buy an inexpensive tuxedo from a tux rental shop or a discount store. GMCLA also sponsors several activities throughout the year which are not mandatory, but which greatly enhance members’ experience in the Chorus, including an optional weekend Retreat in February. Chorus members are financially responsible for the cost of occasional (optional) tours, although partial subsidies may be available.
Volunteering with GMCLA is a great way to get involved, make friends, become part of the family, and make a difference.
GMCLA welcomes both singing and non-singing members. Our non-singing section is known as the Fifth Section. If you are not a singer, or cannot make the time commitment, consider volunteering. There is always a need for people to assist at rehearsals, concerts (usher, sell tickets and merchandise), special events, and in the administrative office.
